Description

VHB Adhesive Magnet Mounting Discs

Turn any non-magnetic roof into a magnetic mounting surface. The semi-permanent setup that lets you remove and transfer your mount whenever you want.

This set of four powder-coated steel discs sticks straight to fiberglass, aluminum, boat decks, and other surfaces that magnets cannot grip on their own. Each disc comes with genuine 3M 5952 VHB adhesive pre-applied. Stick the discs down once, then drop your magnetic mount on top. Lift it off and reposition it any time.

The powder coating protects the steel from corrosion and keeps a clean, durable finish built for the outdoors.

Each disc is pre-drilled with M6 holes if you ever want to bolt down instead. For most installs, the VHB adhesive provides more than enough strength when properly applied.

Pairs with Rubber Coated Magnets Rubber Coated Magnets are sold separately. Stick the discs to your roof, set the magnets on top, and you have a strong semi-permanent hold with easy removal.

Move it between vehicles The discs stay bonded where you place them. Install discs on more than one vehicle or spot, then move the mount with the magnets attached wherever you need it.

Curved or angled roof For curved or uneven surfaces, pair with Swivel Leg Adapters so each foot sits flush for full contact.

Installation

These instructions are for the magnet and VHB backed mounting discs. Magnetic feet are sold separately.

  1. Feed the bolts (blue Loctite already applied) through the openings at each of the four feet on the TRIO mount.
  2. Thread the bolts into the magnets and tighten with the supplied allen key.
  3. Attach one VHB backed disc to each magnetic foot. Confirm each is free of debris.
  4. Confirm your mounting surface is smooth and non-porous. For best adhesion, lightly scuff the surface with a scotch pad. Do this at your discretion, as scuffing will mark the finish. Clean the scuffed area with the included isopropyl alcohol wipes.
  5. Remove the red VHB liner. Carefully set the mount with the exposed discs onto the cleaned surface. Point the TRIO logo and dish cord toward the back (trailing edge) of your vehicle, boat, or RV.
  6. Apply firm pressure through each mounting foot for solid adhesion. If possible, place a heavy object on top of the mount for 24 hours to optimize the bond. Ideal application temperature is 70°F to 100°F.
  7. Slide the Starlink dish onto the mount until it clicks firmly into place. Confirm it is secure. You are online.

Removing the mount
Lift from the rear of the mount itself. Do not use the Starlink dish as a lever.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the VHB Discs used for?

The VHB Discs create a magnetic surface on roofs that are not magnetic. They come as a set of four steel discs with pre-applied 3M VHB adhesive and surface prep wipes. We call them VHB Discs for short.

What surfaces do the VHB Discs work on?

The VHB Discs work on fiberglass and aluminum roofs that magnets cannot grip on their own.

How do the VHB Discs work with magnets?

Stick the VHB Discs to your roof, then place the Rubber Coated Magnets on top for a strong, semi-permanent setup. Make sure each disc sits flush with full contact.

Can I move the VHB Discs between vehicles?

The VHB Discs stay bonded in place. You can lift the mount with the magnets attached and set it on another spot or vehicle that has discs installed.

Do I need to drill to install the VHB Discs?

No. The VHB Discs install with the pre-applied 3M VHB 5952 adhesive and do not require drilling in most applications.

Can I bolt the VHB Discs down instead?

Yes. The VHB Discs are pre-drilled with M6 holes for mechanical fastening. For most installs, the VHB adhesive provides more than enough strength when properly applied.

Do I need Dicor, silicone, or extra adhesive with the VHB Discs?

No. The VHB Discs come with genuine 3M 5952 VHB adhesive. Extra adhesive is typically not needed when the surface is properly prepared.

How strong is the adhesive on the VHB Discs?

The VHB Discs use genuine 3M 5952 VHB adhesive, built for demanding outdoor and automotive use. On a clean, properly prepared surface it provides an extremely strong bond.

How long do the VHB Discs take to cure?

The VHB Discs begin bonding immediately. Maximum strength is typically reached after about 72 hours. Avoid disturbing the mount while it cures.

What is the ideal install temperature for the VHB Discs?

Surface temperatures between 70°F and 100°F.

Do I need to prep the surface for the VHB Discs?

Yes. The surface should be clean, dry, smooth, and non-porous. Use the included alcohol wipes before installing the VHB Discs.

Can I install the VHB Discs on textured or porous surfaces?

We recommend smooth, non-porous surfaces for the best results. Textured or porous surfaces may reduce VHB Disc performance.

Can the VHB Discs be removed later?

Yes, the VHB Discs can be removed, though it may take effort due to the strength of the bond.

Can I transfer the VHB Discs to another vehicle after removal?

No. The adhesive generally needs to be replaced before reinstalling the VHB Discs.

Do I need to wait before driving after installing the VHB Discs?

For maximum strength, allow the VHB Discs about 72 hours to cure before exposing the install to high speeds, harsh weather, or heavy loads.

Can I use the VHB Discs on boats?

Yes. The VHB Discs are common on boats, RVs, campers, trailers, and other non-magnetic surfaces.

What are the VHB Discs made from?

The VHB Discs are made from powder-coated steel for a durable magnetic surface and corrosion resistance.

Why are the VHB Discs powder coated?

The powder coating protects the steel from corrosion while keeping a clean, durable finish for outdoor use.

Can I permanently leave the VHB Discs on my roof?

Yes. Many customers leave the VHB Discs installed and remove and reinstall the mount as needed using the Rubber Coated Magnets.
